How does DFD™ Make the Backslash Carbon Different?

When you first hold the Backslash Carbon, you'll notice that it's much lighter in your hands than our regular, best-selling Backslash. But as soon as you strap in and start carving, you'll feel how the innovation runs much deeper than the core material. 

We’ve added DFD™, a trademarked technology that makes the Backlash Carbon an altogether different riding experience than anything you’ve ridden before. 

What’s the problem with carbon boards?

Carbon boards are fantastic. They're super-responsive and snappy, letting you shred aggressively in backcountry conditions and deep pow. 

However, get onto groomers and hard-pack, and things can get dicey. 

The downside of most carbon boards is that they can feel unstable at high speed because the natural characteristics of carbon fiber amplify micro-vibrations. 

Creating the best backcountry slayer wasn't enough for us; we wanted to give you a carbon board that performs on the whole mountain.

For the 2024 season, we’re introducing our new DFD™ (Dual Frequency Dampening) technology.  

Whereas our previous carbon boards have one source for dampening—with vertical aluminum stringers running tip to tail through the core—the all-new Backslash Carbon now has two dampening sources that absorb vibrations at different frequencies. 

Will DFD™ really give me a smoother ride?

Besides the passive dampening of the aluminum, the Backslash Carbon has reactive and specially formulated D3O® foam that works at a different frequency.

D30® was designed and developed as a patented impact protection material which we have repurposed for vibration dampening. If you watch one of the D3O® demonstration videos, its ability to absorb vibrations becomes apparent. 

All snowboards have rubber foil to dampen the metal edges and increase adhesion between layers of the board. With a fiberglass snowboard, that’s enough. But a carbon fiber snowboard has so much more energy in it that needs to be tuned and filtered so the energy you put into the board comes back out precise and smooth—for clean carves and control in high-speed situations.   

This is what DFD™ (Dual Frequency Dampening) was designed for.

The focus for our carbon boards was for the boards to be light, strong and something you want to ride in all snow conditions, not just perfect snow conditions.

Vertical aluminum stringers filter out the chatter and vibrations most people associate with carbon fiber snowboards or skis.  Adding the D3O® foam to the core with the vertical aluminum stringers takes the board to that next level; you won’t believe it’s a carbon fiber snowboard at all.   

Adding the D3O® foam to the core absorbs more micro-vibrations on harder snow and at higher speeds that aluminum alone can't, giving you a much more versatile and smooth ride. 

Here's what Justin Schoonover, a pro rider based in Oregon, said after a day of testing the Backslash Carbon: 

"This board is incredibly special to me because of its stability and ability to carve. For example, I could do two trench turns all the way down to the ground and still be standing.

It has an incredible amount of stability when riding through chop or bumps, almost to the point where it makes it not scary when things get rough in the snow. It makes everything easy. It requires a confident rider because it will just hold and go when you need it to."
